For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) has a long history of use in traditional medicine among Indigenous peoples of North America for a variety of ailments, including oral conditions such as mouth sores and canker sores. Ethnobotanical records indicate that different Native American tribes have used sagebrush leaves as a poultice or mouth rinse to help soothe oral ulcers, likely due to the plant's antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, while these traditional uses are well documented, scientific validation is limited. Only a few laboratory studies have investigated the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of Artemisia species in general, and virtually none have specifically examined sagebrush for the treatment of canker sores (aphthous ulcers) in controlled clinical settings. Most of the supporting data are derived from in vitro studies showing that extracts from Artemisia species can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria or reduce inflammation, but these results cannot be directly extrapolated to clinical efficacy in treating canker sores. Thus, while there is a strong traditional basis for using sagebrush in this context, scientific evidence remains minimal and indirect. Further research, including clinical trials, would be necessary to confirm the safety and effectiveness of sagebrush for canker sores.
