Sandalwood has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, where it is valued for its cooling, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. In the context of canker sores (aphthous ulcers), sandalwood is sometimes applied topically—often as a paste or oil—based on the belief that it soothes inflammation and helps the ulcers heal faster. However, the evidence for this use is primarily anecdotal and rooted in tradition rather than robust scientific research. There are limited, if any, clinical studies directly investigating sandalwood’s efficacy for canker sores. The potential rationale for its use would be its traditional application for various mouth and skin irritations, as well as laboratory studies showing mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of sandalwood oil or its components. Nonetheless, these properties have not been specifically validated for canker sores in human trials.
