Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B5
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) has been traditionally used to support the healing of canker sores (aphthous ulcers), largely based on anecdotal reports and early small studies. The rationale behind its use is tied to the general role of B vitamins in maintaining mucosal and epithelial health, and observations that deficiencies in B vitamins (including B5) may be associated with oral mucosal lesions. Historically, some practitioners have recommended B5 supplementation for recurrent mouth ulcers, particularly when dietary intake may be insufficient.
However, scientific validation is limited. A double-blind study from the 1970s suggested some benefit of pantothenic acid in the healing of aphthous ulcers, but the study was small and not widely replicated. More recent and robust clinical trials are lacking. Most scientific reviews and guidelines do not include Vitamin B5 as a primary or evidence-based treatment for canker sores, instead emphasizing other B vitamins (like B12, folate) where deficiency is more clearly implicated. Overall, its use is based more on tradition and limited early data rather than strong scientific evidence.
