Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Beet nitrate, primarily in the form of dietary nitrate found in beetroot, has garnered scientific interest for its effects on the vascular system, including capillary health. Dietary nitrate is converted in the body to nitric oxide (NO), a molecule known to induce vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), improve endothelial function, and enhance blood flow. Several clinical studies have shown that beetroot juice supplementation can lower blood pressure and improve vascular function, particularly in populations with cardiovascular risk factors. Improved endothelial function and increased capillary blood flow have been documented, which are relevant to capillary health and microcirculation. However, most research has focused on overall vascular health, blood pressure, and exercise performance, rather than specifically isolating effects on the capillaries themselves. There is a plausible mechanistic link, as nitric oxide plays a fundamental role in regulating capillary tone and permeability. The evidence supporting beet nitrate’s role in supporting the capillaries is promising but not conclusive, as direct studies on capillary-specific outcomes are limited. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for its use in supporting general vascular health, the evidence specifically for capillary support warrants a moderate rating.
