Evidence supporting the use of: Bioflavonoids (mixed)
For the body system: Capillaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bioflavonoids (also known as flavonoids) are a group of plant-derived compounds with antioxidant properties. Their use to support capillary health is grounded in both traditional usage and scientific research, but the evidence is moderate rather than definitive. Flavonoids have been studied for their effects on vascular health, particularly in relation to capillary fragility and permeability. Some specific flavonoids, such as rutin and hesperidin, have been shown in clinical and experimental studies to strengthen capillary walls, reduce capillary permeability, and decrease the risk of bruising and microvascular bleeding. These effects are thought to arise from flavonoids' ability to modulate oxidative stress, enhance collagen synthesis, and inhibit enzymes that degrade connective tissue. A number of double-blind, placebo-controlled trials—especially in Europe—have investigated flavonoids for chronic venous insufficiency and related conditions involving capillary dysfunction. Meta-analyses have found that flavonoid supplementation can reduce symptoms such as leg swelling and improve capillary resistance in these patients. However, most studies use specific flavonoids (like diosmin or rutin) rather than "mixed" bioflavonoids, and the benefit is modest. Overall, while there is a reasonable scientific basis for the use of certain bioflavonoids to support capillary integrity, the quality of evidence is variable, and effects may not be dramatic. More research is needed to clarify the efficacy of mixed bioflavonoids in this context.
