Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are a diverse group of plant compounds found abundantly in fruits and vegetables. Their use to support capillary health is primarily justified by scientific research, although some historical use exists. Flavonoids such as rutin, hesperidin, and quercetin have been studied for their potential effects on capillary strength and function. Several clinical and experimental studies have shown that certain bioflavonoids can reduce capillary permeability and fragility, particularly in conditions like chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids. The mechanism is thought to involve antioxidant effects, inhibition of enzymes that degrade connective tissue, and anti-inflammatory properties.

For example, randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that micronized purified flavonoid fractions (MPFF), which contain diosmin and hesperidin, can decrease symptoms such as leg swelling and improve capillary resistance in patients with venous disorders. Rutin, another flavonoid, has been reported to decrease capillary fragility in people with conditions like hypertension or diabetes, though results are variable. Overall, while there is moderate scientific support for bioflavonoids benefiting capillary health, especially as part of specific formulations for vascular disorders, the evidence is not uniform across all types of bioflavonoids or all populations. Therefore, the evidence rating stands at 3 out of 5.
