Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum), which contains the active compound capsaicin, has both a traditional and emerging scientific basis for supporting the health of capillaries and overall vascular function. Traditionally, cayenne has been used in herbal medicine to stimulate circulation and strengthen blood vessels. More recently, scientific research has begun to elucidate the mechanisms by which cayenne and capsaicin may affect the circulatory system. Studies indicate that capsaicin can promote vasodilation by stimulating the release of nitric oxide and other vasodilatory substances, which can help improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure. Additionally, some animal and in vitro studies suggest that capsaicin may help protect the endothelial lining of blood vessels, potentially supporting capillary integrity and function. However, while these effects are promising, high-quality clinical trials in humans specifically targeting capillary health are limited, and most of the available evidence pertains to generalized cardiovascular benefits rather than direct effects on capillary structure or function. Therefore, while there is reasonable scientific rationale and some supporting evidence, the strength of evidence is moderate, warranting a score of 3 out of 5.
