Rating (out of 5): 4

Erigeron breviscapus is a medicinal herb traditionally used in Chinese medicine, and its extracts have been the subject of multiple pharmacological studies, particularly regarding vascular health. The principal active compound, scutellarin, has been shown in both in vitro and animal studies to improve microcirculation, protect endothelial cells, and increase capillary resistance. Several controlled clinical trials, mostly conducted in China, have demonstrated that extracts of Erigeron breviscapus can improve outcomes in patients with cerebrovascular diseases and diabetic microangiopathy, conditions where capillary function is critical. These studies report improvements in blood flow, reduction of blood viscosity, and decreased capillary permeability.

Mechanistically, the herb appears to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-thrombotic effects, which can protect capillary integrity and function. Its use is also documented in the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China for indications related to vascular health, particularly for ischemic stroke and microcirculatory disorders. However, while the majority of research supports its efficacy in improving capillary health, much of the clinical data comes from Chinese literature, and large-scale, international randomized controlled trials are limited. Overall, the evidence base is stronger than for many traditional remedies, but some caution is warranted due to the need for broader validation.
