Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Flavonoids, a diverse group of phytonutrients found in fruits, vegetables, and certain beverages, have a well-documented role in supporting capillary health, primarily due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Scientific studies have shown that flavonoid mixtures, particularly those containing rutin, diosmin, hesperidin, and quercetin, can strengthen capillary walls, reduce capillary permeability, and improve microcirculation. These effects are especially significant in conditions like chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids, where capillary fragility is a concern.

Clinical trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that flavonoid supplementation can decrease symptoms such as edema, leg heaviness, and capillary bleeding. Mechanistically, flavonoids inhibit enzymes that degrade connective tissue, reduce inflammatory mediators, and scavenge free radicals that contribute to vascular damage. The European Medicines Agency and other health authorities recognize certain flavonoids, such as diosmin and hesperidin, for their vascular-protective effects.

Though not all flavonoid mixtures are identical or equally studied, there is a substantial and growing body of scientific evidence supporting the use of specific flavonoid combinations for maintaining capillary integrity and function. Therefore, the use of flavonoid mixtures for capillary support is justified by scientific evidence, with an evidence strength rating of 4 out of 5.
