Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginkgo biloba has been used traditionally in herbal medicine, particularly in China, for circulatory support, including conditions believed to involve capillary health. Modern scientific research has explored Ginkgo's effects on blood flow, vasodilation, and microcirculation. Several clinical trials and reviews have found that Ginkgo extracts can improve peripheral circulation, especially in patients with intermittent claudication (a circulatory condition) and possibly in those with cognitive decline linked to vascular dysfunction. The active constituents, mainly flavonoids and terpenoids (such as ginkgolides and bilobalide), are believed to exert antioxidant effects and enhance nitric oxide production, which may help support capillary integrity and function. Some studies suggest that Ginkgo extract can increase microvascular blood flow and reduce capillary fragility, which is relevant for capillary support. However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate, with some trials showing benefits and others being inconclusive or showing only modest effects. The European Medicines Agency recognizes Ginkgo for symptomatic relief of mild to moderate peripheral circulatory disorders, but the evidence is not robust enough for a consensus on capillary-specific indications. In summary, there is scientific evidence, though not overwhelmingly strong, supporting Ginkgo’s use in promoting microcirculation and, by extension, capillary health. Its use for this purpose is more justified by modern research than by tradition alone, leading to a moderate evidence rating.
