Evidence supporting the use of: Ginkgo Falvone Glycoside
For the body system: Capillaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ginkgo Flavone Glycosides, extracted from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba, are well-known for their effects on circulatory health, particularly at the capillary level. Clinical and preclinical studies suggest that ginkgo extracts can improve microcirculation by promoting vasodilation, reducing blood viscosity, and exerting antioxidant effects on vascular endothelium. These actions are largely attributed to its high content of flavone glycosides and terpene lactones. Randomized controlled trials have shown that standardized ginkgo extract (often referred to as EGb 761) can enhance peripheral and cerebral blood flow, which is thought to benefit capillary perfusion. Furthermore, ginkgo's antioxidant properties help protect capillary walls from oxidative damage, potentially reducing capillary fragility and permeability.
However, while there is scientific support for the vascular benefits of ginkgo, evidence specifically targeting capillary function is moderate. Most studies focus on broader circulatory effects or cognitive benefits linked to improved microvascular flow, rather than direct measures of capillary health. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews recognize a positive but not definitive role for ginkgo in vascular support, particularly in conditions associated with microcirculatory impairment such as peripheral arterial disease. Therefore, the evidence rating is moderate (3 out of 5), reflecting promising but not conclusive data for the use of Ginkgo Flavone Glycosides in supporting the capillaries.
