Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginkgo flavonglycosides, the primary active constituents in Ginkgo biloba extracts, have been studied for their effects on the circulatory system, including capillary health. Scientific evidence indicates that Ginkgo biloba extract can improve microcirculation by increasing blood flow, reducing blood viscosity, and exerting antioxidant effects that protect endothelial cells lining the capillaries. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have reported benefits of Ginkgo extract in conditions associated with compromised microcirculation, such as peripheral arterial disease and cognitive decline related to vascular insufficiency. The flavonoid and terpene components are believed to stabilize capillary membranes, reduce capillary permeability, and inhibit platelet-activating factor, which can help prevent microvascular damage. However, while the evidence supports some benefit, it is moderate rather than robust, with some studies showing only modest or inconsistent effects. The European Medicines Agency and some pharmacopoeias recognize Ginkgo biloba extract for "microcirculatory disorders." Nonetheless, further large-scale, high-quality studies are needed to fully establish its efficacy for capillary support. Overall, the use of Ginkgo flavonglycosides for supporting capillary health is supported by moderate scientific evidence, justifying its inclusion in supplements targeting microcirculation and capillary function.
