Ginkgoflavones are a group of flavonoid compounds found in the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree. Scientific studies have consistently shown that Ginkgo biloba extracts, which contain ginkgoflavones along with terpene lactones, can have a positive effect on microcirculation, including the capillary system. The proposed mechanism involves antioxidant activity, inhibition of platelet-activating factor, and improvement of endothelial function, all of which are important for maintaining capillary health and reducing capillary fragility.

Clinical trials have demonstrated that standardized Ginkgo biloba extracts (such as EGb 761) can improve symptoms associated with chronic venous insufficiency, peripheral vascular disease, and other conditions involving microvascular dysfunction. Some studies also suggest benefits in reducing capillary permeability and enhancing blood flow, although the evidence is stronger for the whole extract rather than isolated ginkgoflavones. Official monographs by organizations such as the European Medicines Agency and WHO recognize Ginkgo’s use for circulatory support, particularly in the elderly.

However, it is important to note that most research has focused on standardized extracts containing a range of bioactive compounds, not ginkgoflavones in isolation. Thus, while there is moderate scientific support for the use of Ginkgo preparations (and by extension, ginkgoflavones as part of these), the precise contribution of ginkgoflavones to capillary support remains to be fully established.
