Evidence supporting the use of: Grapeseed Oil
For the body system: Capillaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Grapeseed oil contains high levels of polyphenols, including oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs), which have been studied for their potential benefits to vascular health, specifically capillary strength and function. Scientific research, particularly studies on grapeseed extract (which is more concentrated in these polyphenols than the oil), suggests that OPCs can help stabilize collagen and elastin in blood vessel walls, thereby supporting capillary integrity and reducing permeability. For example, several clinical trials have demonstrated that supplementation with grapeseed extracts can reduce symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency and improve capillary resistance, particularly in patients with varicose veins or edema.
However, it is important to note that most of the robust evidence relates to grapeseed extract, not the culinary oil itself, which contains lower concentrations of polyphenols. The oil is still a source of vitamin E and unsaturated fatty acids, which may offer some generic cardiovascular support, but direct evidence for grapeseed oil specifically supporting capillary health is limited. Nonetheless, the mechanistic plausibility and positive findings related to the polyphenol content justify a moderate evidence rating for capillary support, especially when considering products standardized for OPCs.
