Evidence supporting the use of: Hesperidin methylchalcone
For the body system: Capillaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Hesperidin methylchalcone is a flavonoid derived from citrus fruits, commonly used in Europe as a vasoprotective agent. Its use to support capillary health is primarily justified by scientific evidence, although the strength of the evidence is moderate rather than conclusive. Several clinical trials and reviews have examined hesperidin methylchalcone, particularly in combination with other flavonoids like diosmin, for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), hemorrhoids, and capillary fragility. These studies suggest that hesperidin methylchalcone helps reduce capillary permeability, strengthen capillary walls, and decrease symptoms such as swelling, leg heaviness, and bruising.
Mechanistically, hesperidin methylchalcone appears to stabilize endothelial cells and reduce inflammation, which can minimize leakage from capillaries. A number of controlled studies (for example, Galzerano et al., 1991; Cesarone et al., 2005) have shown that preparations containing hesperidin methylchalcone can improve microcirculatory function and reduce capillary fragility in patients with venous disorders. However, most studies use it in combination with other compounds, making it hard to attribute effects to hesperidin methylchalcone alone.
Overall, the scientific evidence supports its benefit for capillary health, but more high-quality, independent research is needed to establish its efficacy when used in isolation. Its use is recognized in European pharmacopoeias and by some health authorities for these indications.
