Evidence supporting the use of: Ligusticum
For the body system: Capillaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ligusticum, particularly species like Ligusticum chuanxiong (commonly known as Chuanxiong or Szechuan lovage), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for promoting blood circulation and addressing vascular health, including the capillaries. In TCM, Ligusticum is often included in herbal formulas intended to "invigorate the blood" and resolve "blood stasis," which are believed to underlie a variety of circulatory problems such as bruising, varicosities, or capillary fragility. The herb is frequently prescribed for conditions like headaches, menstrual disorders, and trauma, with the rationale that it improves microcirculation and helps maintain the integrity of blood vessels.
However, while there are some preliminary pharmacological studies indicating that Ligusticum chuanxiong may have vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and antiplatelet effects, rigorous clinical trials specifically demonstrating benefits to the capillary system are lacking. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage patterns rather than modern biomedical research. As a result, while Ligusticum's use to support capillary health is well-rooted in tradition, scientific validation is limited, and the overall strength of evidence supporting its efficacy for this specific body system should be considered modest.
