Evidence supporting the use of: Maratime Pine
For the body system: Capillaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Maritime Pine (Pinus pinaster) extract, often referred to by the patented name Pycnogenol, has a growing body of scientific evidence supporting its use for capillary and vascular health. The extract is rich in procyanidins, a type of flavonoid with antioxidant properties, which are thought to strengthen blood vessel walls and improve microcirculation. Several randomized, placebo-controlled trials have shown that Pycnogenol supplementation can reduce capillary permeability and fragility, especially in individuals with chronic venous insufficiency, edema, and varicose veins. For example, a 2002 study in the journal Angiology found that Pycnogenol significantly reduced leg swelling and improved capillary resistance compared to placebo.
Mechanistically, Maritime Pine extract appears to stabilize collagen and elastin in blood vessel walls, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate inflammatory pathways. These actions are believed to help maintain the integrity of capillaries and reduce leakage, bruising, and swelling. The European Medicines Agency has recognized Pycnogenol as a traditional herbal medicinal product for chronic venous insufficiency, further supporting its use in this context. However, while the evidence is promising, it is primarily centered on vascular health in general, and direct studies on capillaries specifically are more limited. Overall, the scientific validation for Maritime Pine extract supporting the capillary system is strong, with an evidence rating of 4 out of 5.
