Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Proanthocyanidins are a class of polyphenolic compounds found in various plants, most notably in grape seeds, pine bark (as in Pycnogenol®), and certain berries. Their use to support capillary health is primarily grounded in scientific research. Proanthocyanidins are known for their potent antioxidant properties, which can help protect blood vessels, including capillaries, from oxidative damage. Several clinical and experimental studies have observed that proanthocyanidins can enhance capillary strength and decrease capillary permeability. For instance, research has shown that grape seed extract, rich in proanthocyanidins, can reduce symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency and decrease leg edema, both of which are linked to capillary function (J. Med. Food, 2013; Phytother. Res., 2012). Additionally, studies on Pycnogenol® have demonstrated improvements in microcirculation and reductions in capillary fragility (Angiology, 2002).

However, while the evidence is promising, it is not yet definitive or universally endorsed by major medical bodies for widespread clinical use. Most studies note beneficial effects, but sample sizes are often small, and more rigorous, large-scale trials are needed. Overall, there is moderate scientific support (3/5) for the use of proanthocyanidins in supporting capillary health, primarily due to their antioxidant action and observed effects in improving capillary integrity and function.
