Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Sichuan Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, formerly Sophora japonica) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting the health of blood vessels, particularly capillaries. The flower buds, known as "Huai Hua," are traditionally used to "cool the blood" and stop bleeding, especially in conditions such as hemorrhoids, blood in the stool, or other bleeding disorders. The primary active constituents, such as rutin and quercetin, are flavonoids known to strengthen capillary walls and reduce capillary fragility. While these flavonoids have demonstrated capillary-protective effects in laboratory and some clinical settings, most of the support for using Sichuan Pagoda Tree specifically for capillary health comes from traditional practice and historical texts rather than robust modern clinical trials. Some pharmacological studies have shown that extracts of the plant can reduce capillary permeability and fragility in animal models and limited human studies, but high-quality, large-scale clinical research is lacking. Therefore, the use of Sichuan Pagoda Tree to support the capillary system is primarily justified by traditional medicine, with moderate evidence (rating: 3) based on historical use and some supportive phytochemical data, but not by extensive clinical validation.
