Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin C (mixed)
For the body system: Capillaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has scientific validation for its role in supporting capillary health. Vitamin C is essential for the biosynthesis of collagen, a structural protein that is a key component of blood vessel walls, including capillaries. Adequate collagen production ensures that capillaries remain strong and flexible, preventing them from becoming fragile and prone to rupture. Deficiency in vitamin C is classically associated with scurvy, a disease characterized by weakened blood vessels that leads to bleeding gums, petechiae (small red or purple spots), and easy bruising—all signs of capillary fragility.
Multiple studies support the importance of vitamin C in vascular health. For example, research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and British Journal of Nutrition has shown that vitamin C supplementation can improve endothelial function, reduce capillary fragility, and decrease the risk of microvascular bleeding. Furthermore, vitamin C acts as a potent antioxidant, protecting capillary endothelium from oxidative stress, which can otherwise damage vessel integrity.
While the strongest evidence is for prevention of deficiency-related capillary problems, some observational and clinical data suggest that even in non-deficient individuals, vitamin C intake may support overall vascular health. Thus, vitamin C's use to support the capillaries is well-grounded in both clinical and mechanistic research.
