Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla or Chamaemelum nobile) has a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine, particularly for its anti-inflammatory, soothing, and antimicrobial properties. In the context of carbuncles—painful clusters of boils caused by bacterial infection—chamomile has been applied topically in the form of poultices, compresses, or washes to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. Traditional European and Middle Eastern folk medicine often recommended chamomile preparations for skin infections and abscesses, including carbuncles, due to its perceived ability to soothe irritated tissue and promote healing.

Although there are in vitro studies that support chamomile’s anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial effects, there is limited direct clinical evidence validating its efficacy for treating carbuncles specifically. Most support for its use in this context comes from historical records and ethnobotanical sources rather than modern clinical trials. Therefore, while chamomile might provide some symptomatic relief or adjunctive support when used as a topical application, it should not be considered a substitute for appropriate medical care, such as antibiotics or surgical drainage, which are the standard treatments for carbuncles. In summary, chamomile’s use for carbuncles is primarily justified by tradition, with a modest level of historical evidence but little robust scientific validation.
