Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Patrinia (also known as Patrinia scabiosaefolia or Patrinia villosa) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment of carbuncles, abscesses, and other forms of swellings and infections. This use is rooted in centuries-old herbal practices, where Patrinia is classified as a heat-clearing and toxin-resolving herb. In classic TCM texts, it is often included in formulas targeted at "sores and toxic swellings," reflecting its traditional indication for skin and soft tissue infections such as carbuncles.

The evidence base supporting Patrinia for carbuncles is mainly historical and anecdotal. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that Patrinia extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which might provide a plausible mechanism for its use; however, these studies are largely preclinical, conducted in vitro or in animal models, and do not specifically address carbuncles in humans. There is a lack of high-quality clinical trials confirming efficacy and safety for this condition.

In summary, the use of Patrinia for carbuncles is justified primarily by tradition, with limited laboratory evidence that does not yet translate into robust clinical recommendations.
