Camelina oil, derived from the seeds of Camelina sativa (also known as false flax), has gained attention for its potential cardiovascular benefits primarily due to its high content of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid. Several small-scale clinical studies have investigated the impact of camelina oil on cardiovascular risk factors. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Metabolism (2015) found that consumption of camelina oil by healthy adults resulted in significant reductions in total and LDL cholesterol compared to sunflower oil. Similarly, a study in Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases (2018) showed that camelina oil supplementation improved blood lipid profiles in patients with impaired glucose metabolism. The mechanism is believed to be related to the oil's favorable fatty acid composition, with a high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids and a low ratio of omega-6 to omega-3, which may help reduce inflammation and atherogenic risk. However, the body of evidence remains limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and a scarcity of long-term clinical outcome data. While the results are promising and suggest camelina oil may be beneficial for cardiovascular health, larger and longer-term studies are necessary to confirm these effects and establish clinical recommendations. Thus, the use of camelina oil for cardiovascular support is scientifically plausible but only modestly supported by human research at this time.
