Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is an antioxidant that has been investigated for its potential role in preventing or slowing the progression of cataracts. The formation of cataracts is strongly associated with oxidative stress and damage to the lens proteins in the eye. As a potent antioxidant, ALA can scavenge reactive oxygen species and regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin C and glutathione, both of which are important for lens health.

Preclinical studies, particularly in animal models, have shown that ALA administration can decrease oxidative damage in the lens and may delay the onset or progression of cataracts. For example, studies in rats have demonstrated that ALA supplementation reduces lens opacification and maintains antioxidant enzyme activity. Some in vitro studies also suggest that ALA can protect lens epithelial cells from oxidative injury.

However, clinical evidence in humans is very limited. There are only a few small-scale studies and case reports, and most have not provided strong or conclusive evidence that ALA can prevent or treat cataracts in people. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale for its use based on its antioxidant properties and promising preclinical data, robust clinical trials are lacking.

In summary, the use of alpha lipoic acid for cataract prevention or treatment is supported by some scientific evidence, but mainly from animal and laboratory studies, with minimal direct evidence in humans.
