For the health condition: Cataracts
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Dodder (Cuscuta spp.) has been used in traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic systems, for a variety of ailments including eye disorders such as cataracts. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the seeds of dodder (Cuscuta chinensis), known as "Tu Si Zi", are believed to tonify the liver and kidney, which are organs thought to influence eye health in TCM theory. Ancient texts and modern herbal compendia reference dodder seeds as part of herbal formulas for vision support and for addressing symptoms associated with cataracts, such as blurred vision or cloudiness of the lens.
However, scientific validation for the effectiveness of dodder seeds in treating or preventing cataracts is minimal. Some preclinical studies suggest that extracts of Cuscuta may have antioxidant properties, which theoretically could be beneficial in slowing the progression of cataracts, as oxidative stress is implicated in cataract formation. Despite this, there are no well-designed clinical trials in humans that demonstrate clear efficacy or safety for dodder in cataract treatment.
In summary, the use of dodder for cataracts is primarily rooted in traditional practices with only minor supportive laboratory evidence. Its use in this context should be considered with caution, and patients are advised to consult eye care specialists for evidence-based treatments.
