Evidence supporting the use of: Antioxidant (unspecified)
For the health condition: Chemotherapy (reducing side effects)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Antioxidants have been explored as adjuncts to chemotherapy primarily to reduce the side effects caused by oxidative stress induced by many chemotherapeutic agents. Scientific interest in this area stems from the fact that chemotherapy drugs, such as doxorubicin and cisplatin, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) as part of their mechanism of action, which can lead to collateral damage in healthy tissues. This has prompted investigations into whether antioxidants (such as vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium, and N-acetylcysteine) might mitigate these toxicities without reducing the effectiveness of chemotherapy. However, the evidence supporting the use of unspecified antioxidants for reducing chemotherapy side effects is mixed and somewhat controversial. Some clinical trials and systematic reviews suggest modest benefits in terms of reducing specific side effects (e.g., neuropathy, mucositis, cardiotoxicity), but others have raised concerns that antioxidants could also protect cancer cells from oxidative damage, potentially reducing chemotherapy efficacy. Meta-analyses and clinical guidelines emphasize caution, as the heterogeneity of studies, the use of different antioxidants, dosages, and timing, as well as the lack of large, high-quality randomized controlled trials, limit firm conclusions. Overall, there is some scientific basis for using antioxidants to reduce chemotherapy side effects, but evidence is inconsistent and not robust enough to universally recommend their use. Most oncologists advise against routine antioxidant supplementation during chemotherapy outside of clinical trials.
