Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium breve has some emerging scientific evidence for its use in supporting patients undergoing chemotherapy, particularly in reducing gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea and mucositis. Chemotherapy can disrupt the gut microbiota, leading to adverse symptoms and a weakened immune system. Several preclinical studies and some small clinical trials have explored the potential for probiotic supplementation, including B. breve, to restore microbiota balance and improve gut barrier function during cancer treatment.

For instance, randomized controlled trials in pediatric patients with leukemia have shown that B. breve supplementation may reduce the incidence and severity of chemotherapy-induced diarrhea. Animal studies have further demonstrated that B. breve can decrease intestinal inflammation and promote mucosal healing. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of the immune response, suppression of pathogenic bacteria, and enhancement of epithelial barrier integrity.

However, the evidence base remains relatively limited. Most studies have small sample sizes, and there is a lack of large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically isolating B. breve’s effects (as opposed to multi-strain probiotics). As a result, while the scientific rationale is plausible and preliminary data are encouraging, the current strength of evidence is modest. Larger, well-designed clinical studies are needed to confirm efficacy and establish standardized protocols for its use in chemotherapy patients.
