C-Phycocyanin is a pigment-protein complex derived from Spirulina and other cyanobacteria, and its potential as an adjunct to chemotherapy has been increasingly explored in preclinical studies. Scientific interest centers on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that C-Phycocyanin can scavenge free radicals, modulate inflammatory cytokines, and protect normal cells against oxidative stress induced by chemotherapeutic agents such as cisplatin and doxorubicin. For instance, research has shown that pre-treatment with C-Phycocyanin can reduce the severity of chemotherapy-induced nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity in rodent models, likely by mitigating oxidative damage and regulating apoptotic pathways. These effects may translate into reduced side effects for patients undergoing chemotherapy.
However, the evidence base is still limited to laboratory and animal research; there are no large-scale, randomized controlled clinical trials in humans directly confirming the efficacy or safety of C-Phycocyanin for supporting chemotherapy patients. While the mechanistic rationale is strong and early data are promising, current scientific validation is insufficient for routine clinical recommendation. Thus, the evidence rating is moderate (2/5), reflecting preclinical promise but a lack of direct human data.
