Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Mistletoe (Taxillus chinensis, also known as "Sang Ji Sheng") is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) primarily to strengthen bones and nourish the liver and kidneys, but in recent years, some research has explored its use as an adjunct therapy during chemotherapy, mainly to reduce side effects and improve quality of life. Several small-scale laboratory and animal studies have indicated that extracts from Chinese Mistletoe may have immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, which could theoretically help patients undergoing chemotherapy by reducing fatigue, nausea, and immune suppression. However, the majority of robust clinical evidence for mistletoe’s supportive role during chemotherapy comes from studies on European mistletoe (Viscum album), not Chinese Mistletoe. Only a few preliminary clinical studies and case reports have evaluated Chinese Mistletoe specifically, and these are generally of low methodological quality, with small sample sizes and inconsistent results. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence suggesting possible benefit, the effectiveness and safety of Chinese Mistletoe for reducing chemotherapy side effects has not been conclusively established. High-quality randomized controlled trials are lacking. Therefore, its use is somewhat supported by scientific investigation, but the overall evidence is weak and insufficient for firm clinical recommendations.
