Hyphomycetes refers to a class of filamentous fungi, many of which are known for producing bioactive compounds with medicinal properties. In the context of chemotherapy support, certain Hyphomycetes species, such as Cordyceps and Paecilomyces, have been investigated for their potential to reduce chemotherapy-induced side effects and enhance immune function. Scientific studies, primarily conducted in vitro and in animal models, as well as limited clinical trials, have shown that polysaccharides, nucleosides, and other metabolites from these fungi can modulate the immune response, reduce oxidative stress, and potentially alleviate symptoms such as fatigue and immunosuppression associated with chemotherapy. For example, extracts from Cordyceps sinensis have demonstrated immunostimulatory effects and the ability to ameliorate myelosuppression in preclinical models. Some small-scale human studies have suggested improvements in quality of life and reduction of adverse effects, but the sample sizes and methodologies often limit the strength of these findings. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and early evidence supporting the adjunctive use of some Hyphomycetes-derived products in chemotherapy, the body of evidence is still moderate and not fully conclusive, warranting further rigorous clinical trials to establish efficacy and safety profiles.
