Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ostarine (also known as MK-2866 or enobosarm) is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that has been investigated for its potential to counteract muscle wasting (cachexia) associated with cancer and chemotherapy. Muscle wasting is a common and serious side effect of chemotherapy, contributing to weakness, fatigue, and reduced quality of life. Ostarine is thought to exert anabolic effects primarily in skeletal muscle, with fewer androgenic side effects compared to traditional anabolic steroids.

Several clinical studies, including phase II and phase III trials, have evaluated Ostarine for the treatment of cancer cachexia. For example, a phase II randomized, controlled trial (Dobs et al., 2013, J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle) demonstrated that enobosarm increased lean body mass and improved physical function in patients with cancer-related muscle wasting. However, while these results are promising, subsequent larger trials have produced mixed results regarding improvements in physical function, and Ostarine is not currently approved by regulatory agencies for this indication.

In summary, there is scientific rationale and moderate-quality clinical evidence supporting the use of Ostarine to help mitigate muscle wasting and some side effects of chemotherapy, but the evidence is not yet definitive and further research is needed. Ostarine is not approved by the FDA or similar agencies for this use outside of clinical trials.
