Silychristin is one of the main flavonolignans found in silymarin, an extract from the seeds of Silybum marianum (milk thistle). Silymarin, and by extension silychristin, has been investigated for its potential to reduce chemotherapy-induced side effects, particularly hepatotoxicity. The scientific evidence is limited but promising in preclinical models. Several in vitro and animal studies suggest silymarin and its constituents, including silychristin, possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties that may protect healthy cells from the damaging effects of chemotherapeutic agents like doxorubicin and cisplatin.
Clinical trials specifically evaluating silychristin are lacking; most human studies use silymarin as a complex mixture. While some small trials of silymarin in cancer patients have shown reductions in liver enzyme elevations and some improvement in quality of life, these findings cannot be wholly attributed to silychristin alone. There is also concern that antioxidant supplements may theoretically interfere with the efficacy of some chemotherapies, although evidence is mixed. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some preclinical support for silychristin’s protective effects during chemotherapy, robust clinical data are lacking. The evidence for its use is therefore rated as 2 out of 5, indicating preliminary but insufficient support for routine clinical use in this context.
