Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Verbascoside (also known as acteoside) is a phenylethanoid glycoside found in various medicinal plants such as Verbascum, Plantago, and Lippia species. Its use to support or reduce side effects of chemotherapy is primarily supported by preclinical scientific evidence rather than a long history of traditional use for this specific purpose. Several in vitro and animal studies have investigated verbascoside for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties. These properties are relevant because chemotherapy-induced damage is often associated with oxidative stress and inflammation in healthy tissues.

For example, studies have shown that verbascoside can protect normal cells against oxidative injury and apoptosis induced by chemotherapeutic agents, such as doxorubicin and cisplatin, in cell culture and rodent models. In these models, verbascoside administration led to reduced markers of oxidative stress and improved cellular viability without interfering with the anticancer efficacy of the drugs. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans directly examining the effects of verbascoside on chemotherapy side effects. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence supporting its protective effects in preclinical settings, the overall evidence level remains low (rated 2/5) due to the absence of human clinical data.

In summary, verbascoside shows promise in reducing chemotherapy side effects based on animal and cell studies, but clinical validation is still lacking.
