Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aerva lanata, commonly known as "Mountain Knotgrass," is a plant widely used in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda and various folk practices across India and Africa. In these traditions, Aerva lanata is primarily employed for its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and lithotriptic (stone-dissolving) properties. There are references in historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys suggesting its use in managing general pain and inflammation, and occasionally for conditions described as "chest pain." However, the term "chest pain" in traditional contexts often refers to a broad spectrum of symptoms, not necessarily the same as angina or cardiac-related pain recognized in modern medicine.

There is very limited scientific evidence directly supporting the use of Aerva lanata for chest pain specifically. While some pharmacological studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of the plant extracts in animal models, these findings have not been extended to controlled clinical trials for chest pain of any etiology. No robust scientific literature confirms its efficacy for cardiac or non-cardiac chest pain in humans. Thus, the use of Aerva lanata for chest pain remains rooted in tradition rather than substantiated by modern research, and the available evidence is weak and largely anecdotal.
