Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Belleric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), known as "Bibhitaki" in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine, primarily as one of the three fruits in the Triphala formulation. Traditionally, it has been used for a variety of health concerns, including respiratory issues and general cardiovascular support. In classical Ayurvedic texts, Bibhitaki is sometimes recommended for conditions involving the chest, such as cough and asthma, which may occasionally be interpreted broadly to include chest discomfort. However, specific references to its use for "chest pain" (angina or other forms of cardiac chest pain) are limited and not well-defined. There is little direct clinical or preclinical scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for chest pain. Modern studies focus more on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering properties, which may have indirect cardiovascular benefits, but do not constitute direct support for treating or managing chest pain. Therefore, its use for chest pain is primarily justified by traditional practices, with minimal evidence and no robust scientific validation for this particular indication.
