Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Biden's pilosa (commonly known as Spanish needle or black-jack) is primarily used in traditional medicine systems for a variety of ailments, including chest pain. Ethnobotanical surveys, particularly from regions in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, document its use in the management of symptoms described as “chest pain,” which may correspond in some cases to respiratory complaints or angina-like symptoms. Traditional healers often prepare infusions, decoctions, or poultices from the aerial parts of the plant for this purpose. However, the evidence supporting its use for chest pain is limited to these ethnomedical records; there are no robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically evaluating the efficacy or mechanisms of Bidens pilosa for chest pain in humans. While some studies note anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the plant, which could theoretically have a role in conditions associated with chest discomfort, this does not equate to direct evidence for chest pain relief. Therefore, while traditional usage is documented, scientific validation specifically for chest pain is lacking.
