Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Capillary Artemisia (Artemisia capillaris), also known as Yin Chen Hao in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been used historically in East Asian herbal practice primarily for liver and gallbladder disorders, but it is sometimes included in formulas aimed at addressing chest pain, especially when such pain is interpreted as being related to "Qi stagnation" or liver dysfunction. The traditional use does not equate to chest pain in the biomedical sense (e.g., angina, myocardial infarction) but may overlap with symptoms like discomfort or fullness in the chest due to digestive or hepatic issues. There is scant scientific evidence directly supporting the use of Capillary Artemisia for treating chest pain as understood in Western medicine. Most modern research on Artemisia capillaris focuses on its hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, with little to no clinical data specifically examining its efficacy for chest pain. Therefore, its use for chest pain is primarily justified by traditional practice, and the evidence supporting this specific indication is weak.
