Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Earthworm (commonly referred to as "Di Long" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a long history of use in East Asian medical systems for various conditions, including chest pain (often categorized as "chest Bi syndrome" or related to "blood stasis" and "phlegm obstruction" in TCM theory). The traditional rationale is that earthworm is thought to "clear heat," "open channels," and "relieve spasms," which are believed to help alleviate discomfort and pain in the chest. Earthworm is sometimes incorporated into herbal formulas aimed at improving circulation or resolving blockages, which are traditional explanations for chest pain.
However, scientific evidence supporting the use of earthworm for chest pain is minimal. Some laboratory research has suggested that earthworm extracts may have fibrinolytic (clot-dissolving) properties, which has prompted some modern interest in its potential for cardiovascular health. Despite this, there are no high-quality clinical trials or robust scientific studies directly demonstrating effectiveness for chest pain (angina or other causes), nor is there clear evidence of safety or efficacy for this specific indication. Its use for chest pain remains rooted primarily in traditional practices rather than modern pharmacological validation.
