Evidence supporting the use of: Eupolyphaga sinensis
For the health condition: Chest Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Eupolyphaga sinensis, known as "Tu Bie Chong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long-standing use in the treatment of chest pain, particularly pain related to blood stasis such as angina or post-traumatic injury. In TCM, Eupolyphaga sinensis is categorized as an herb that "breaks up blood stasis" and "promotes the movement of blood." Chest pain, often conceptualized as a result of impaired blood flow or stasis in TCM, is therefore treated with agents that promote circulation. Historical texts and the Chinese Pharmacopoeia include Eupolyphaga sinensis as part of formulas for chest pain and related conditions.
Scientific evidence regarding its efficacy for chest pain is limited. Some pharmacological studies indicate that extracts from Eupolyphaga sinensis may have anticoagulant, antithrombotic, and circulatory-promoting effects in vitro and in animal models. However, there are few, if any, robust clinical trials directly evaluating its use for chest pain in humans. Most modern reviews and pharmacological assessments acknowledge its traditional use and potential mechanisms but emphasize the need for more rigorous clinical research. Thus, while the use is deeply rooted in traditional practice, scientific validation remains preliminary, justifying a moderate evidence rating of 2 for its traditional support but weak direct clinical evidence.
