Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Five-Leaf Cassia (Senna pentaphylla or Senna alata, also known as "Five-Leaf Senna") has been used in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Asia and Africa. Traditional uses of Five-Leaf Cassia primarily focus on its laxative, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. In some folk herbal traditions, the plant has been used for a variety of ailments, and there are anecdotal references to its use for “chest complaints” or vaguely defined chest discomfort. However, these references are sparse, and there is little direct documentation tying Five-Leaf Cassia specifically to the treatment or support of chest pain (angina or cardiac-related pain) in classical herbal pharmacopoeias. Scientific evidence supporting its use for chest pain is absent; the majority of published research centers on its antimicrobial, antifungal, and laxative effects. No clinical trials or preclinical (animal/laboratory) studies substantiate its effectiveness for chest pain management. Thus, any use for this indication is based on tradition, and the evidence is extremely limited and indirect, warranting a low evidence score.
