Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Fragrant Angelica (Angelica dahurica), known as "Bai Zhi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is primarily used in traditional systems for various conditions, such as headaches, nasal congestion, and skin disorders. Its application for chest pain is rooted in traditional usage rather than scientific validation. In TCM, chest pain may be attributed to causes like "Qi stagnation" or "Wind-cold invasion," and Bai Zhi is sometimes included in multi-herb formulations intended to "move Qi" or alleviate pain. However, there is very limited documentation of Fragrant Angelica being a primary or specific remedy for chest pain in classical texts; its use for this indication is less prominent compared to other herbs like Chuan Xiong or Dan Shen. From a scientific perspective, there is currently little to no clinical research supporting the use of Fragrant Angelica for chest pain, especially of cardiac origin (e.g., angina). Most studies on Angelica dahurica focus on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties, but these are not directly linked to the relief of chest pain. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for its inclusion in formulas addressing chest discomfort, the evidence is weak and primarily anecdotal or based on historical practice rather than robust scientific data.
