Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Great Plantain (Plantago major) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Europe, Asia, and North America. Traditional healers have used plantain leaves for a variety of ailments, mostly related to its perceived anti-inflammatory, demulcent, and wound healing properties. In some folk medicine traditions, plantain preparations have been applied topically or taken internally for respiratory complaints, including coughs, bronchitis, and chest discomfort, which may have included what was described as "chest pain." However, there is little specific traditional documentation of its use for acute or chronic chest pain as defined in modern medical terms, such as angina or cardiac pain. Most references to chest-related uses focus on soothing mucous membranes and alleviating irritation from cough or mild respiratory infections, rather than direct treatment of pain resulting from cardiovascular issues.

Scientifically, there is currently no substantial evidence supporting the use of Great Plantain for chest pain. Clinical studies validating its efficacy for this purpose are lacking, and its use for chest pain is not recognized by modern phytotherapy or clinical guidelines. The traditional use, therefore, appears to be based on broader applications for respiratory comfort rather than specific evidence for pain relief in the chest.
