Evidence supporting the use of: Green onion
For the health condition: Chest Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Green onion (Allium fistulosum), also known as scallion or spring onion, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other folk medicine systems for various ailments, including chest pain. In TCM, green onion is believed to "dispel cold," "unblock yang," and promote circulation, and is sometimes included in remedies targeting chest congestion or chest pain due to its supposed ability to "open meridians" and relieve stagnation. Historical texts may reference its use in decoctions or poultices for chest discomfort, particularly when this is attributed to external cold or wind invasion, rather than cardiac causes.
However, there is very limited scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of green onion for treating chest pain, whether from cardiac, respiratory, or musculoskeletal causes. Modern research on Allium species often focuses on their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cardiovascular effects, but specific studies on green onion for chest pain are lacking. The traditional use is primarily based on historical practice and TCM theory rather than rigorous clinical studies. Therefore, while green onion has a documented traditional use for chest pain, especially in the context of TCM, the strength of this evidence is weak in the absence of scientific validation.
