Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Honeysuckle (genus Lonicera) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, honeysuckle flowers (Lonicera japonica, known as Jinyinhua) are used for their purported "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties. Chest pain, which may be interpreted in TCM as a result of "heat" or "toxicity" affecting the chest, could be addressed with honeysuckle as part of complex herbal formulas. However, this use is rooted in traditional theories rather than modern pathological concepts of chest pain (e.g., angina, myocardial infarction). There is currently no robust scientific evidence to support honeysuckle's effectiveness in treating chest pain of any etiology. Clinical trials investigating honeysuckle for chest pain are lacking, and mechanistic studies have not demonstrated direct cardiovascular effects relevant to the relief of chest pain. Thus, its use for chest pain is justified by tradition, particularly within the framework of TCM, but is not supported by scientific validation. The evidence rating is low (1), reflecting traditional usage but an absence of significant scientific corroboration.
