Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Horsemint (Monarda spp.), also known as bee balm or wild bergamot, has been traditionally used in various Native American and folk medicine practices. Historical records indicate that indigenous peoples used horsemint preparations as teas or poultices for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues, fevers, and respiratory conditions. There are mentions in ethnobotanical literature of horsemint being used to relieve symptoms such as cough and chest congestion, which may be indirectly related to chest discomfort or pain arising from respiratory infections. However, there is no clear documentation supporting its use specifically for treating chest pain of cardiac origin or non-respiratory causes. Scientific evidence for horsemint’s efficacy in treating chest pain is lacking. No controlled clinical studies or robust pharmacological investigations exist to confirm its effectiveness for this indication. Its traditional use appears to be limited to mild, symptomatic relief associated with respiratory complaints, possibly due to its mild expectorant and antimicrobial properties. Therefore, while horsemint has historical use for respiratory issues that might include chest discomfort, there is minimal evidence to support its effectiveness for true chest pain, particularly of cardiovascular origin.
