Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Indian Long Pepper (Piper longum) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. In Ayurveda, it is known as "Pippali" and has been used for various ailments, including respiratory conditions such as cough, asthma, and chest congestion. Chest pain, especially when associated with respiratory infections or congestion, may be addressed with Pippali as a component of polyherbal formulations. The traditional rationale is based on its reputed ability to stimulate digestion, improve respiratory function, and clear mucus. However, direct evidence supporting its use specifically for chest pain (as opposed to cough or bronchitis) is limited to these traditional practices and descriptions; it is seldom described as a primary remedy for angina or cardiac-related chest pain. There is insufficient scientific research or clinical study data validating the effectiveness of Indian Long Pepper for chest pain of any etiology. Most modern research on Piper longum focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and respiratory effects, but not on chest pain per se. Therefore, its use for chest pain is justified primarily by tradition, with weak evidence and little to no scientific validation.
