Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ophiopogon (Ophiopogon japonicus), known as "Mai Men Dong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is primarily used within traditional frameworks to address symptoms associated with chest pain, especially when such pain is attributed to "yin deficiency" or "dryness" affecting the lungs and heart. In TCM, Ophiopogon is believed to nourish yin, moisten dryness, and clear the heart, thus alleviating discomfort in the chest. Historical texts, such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and subsequent materia medica, describe its use for "clearing the heart and eliminating vexation" and for treating symptoms like dry cough, palpitations, and chest tightness. Modern scientific studies on Ophiopogon for chest pain specifically are limited. Some pharmacological research has identified anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cardioprotective effects of extracts from Ophiopogon japonicus, but these studies are either preclinical or focus on broader cardiovascular health rather than directly on angina or chest pain. There are few, if any, well-designed clinical trials in English literature that validate its efficacy for chest pain as defined in Western medicine. Thus, the use of Ophiopogon for this indication remains primarily justified by traditional use rather than rigorous scientific validation.
