Evidence supporting the use of: Panax Notoginseng
For the health condition: Chest Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Panax notoginseng, also known as "Sanqi" or "Tianqi" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been used for centuries to support cardiovascular health, particularly for the management of chest pain (angina) and blood stasis syndromes. The herb is commonly included in TCM formulas aimed at "invigorating blood circulation" and "removing blood stasis," which are believed to underlie chest pain and related symptoms. Historical texts such as the "Compendium of Materia Medica" and modern clinical practice guidelines in TCM describe its use for symptoms consistent with angina pectoris, including chest tightness and pain. Although some laboratory and animal studies suggest that Panax notoginseng may have cardiovascular benefits—such as anti-inflammatory, antiplatelet, and vasodilatory effects—high-quality clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most clinical studies conducted to date are small, lack rigorous controls, or are published in non-English language journals, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions. Systematic reviews highlight a need for more robust trials. In summary, the use of Panax notoginseng for chest pain is primarily justified by a strong tradition of use in TCM, with limited but suggestive scientific findings. The evidence supporting its effectiveness for chest pain in humans is weak and mainly anecdotal or historical in nature.
