Patrinia (commonly known as Patrinia scabiosaefolia or Patrinia villosa) has a long-standing history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is traditionally employed for its purported abilities to "clear heat and toxins," reduce inflammation, and promote blood circulation. In TCM, chest pain—often associated with conditions such as angina or 'chest bi syndrome'—is believed to result from obstruction of qi and blood, or accumulation of heat and toxins in the chest region. Patrinia is included in certain herbal formulations aimed at relieving these symptoms, particularly when chest pain is thought to be related to abscesses or infections (e.g., lung abscess or pleurisy).

However, scientific evidence supporting Patrinia's efficacy specifically for chest pain, especially of cardiovascular origin (such as angina), is limited and largely anecdotal. Most modern research on Patrinia focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties, with only indirect relevance to chest pain relief. There are a few preclinical studies suggesting Patrinia extracts may exert mild analgesic or anti-inflammatory effects, but clinical trials substantiating its use for chest pain are lacking. Therefore, while Patrinia's use for chest pain is justified by traditional practice, the evidence level supporting this indication remains low due to the absence of rigorous clinical data.
