For the health condition: Chest Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Peucedanum is a genus of plants in the Apiaceae family, and several species (such as Peucedanum praeruptorum and Peucedanum japonicum) have been used in traditional medicine systems, notably in Chinese and Korean medicine. Peucedanum root, commonly referred to as "Qian Hu" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is used to "dispel phlegm" and "relieve cough and dyspnea," with some traditional texts mentioning its use for chest pain associated with phlegm stagnation or cough.
The rationale for its use in chest pain is largely based on traditional concepts rather than modern clinical evidence. In TCM, chest pain may result from various causes, including "Qi stagnation," and Peucedanum is sometimes included in herbal formulas aimed at addressing these imbalances. However, the chest pain referred to in traditional contexts is not always equivalent to the angina or cardiac chest pain described in biomedicine; it may refer to discomfort or pain associated with respiratory conditions.
There is scant scientific research directly investigating Peucedanum for the treatment of chest pain, particularly cardiac-related chest pain. Some preclinical studies have found anti-inflammatory and antitussive effects of certain Peucedanum species, but there is no high-quality clinical evidence validating its use for chest pain. Thus, the practice is supported by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
